Reading at Roydon

At Roydon we have colour banded reading books that are matched carefully to the phonics phase that children are working on. We want our children to love reading so we have a range of different types of books (fiction, non-fiction poetry, plays etc.) purchased from a variety of published reading schemes. The colour bands mean that children are able to access a variety of texts at their level which will keep them engaged.

The books children read will vary in a number of ways, including layout, size, vocabulary and length. The difference between each colour band/number stage is very gradual, so that children do not experience great difficulty moving up through the scheme.

Book bands are intended to support each child as a reader, and enable teachers to carefully check what each child can do and what their next steps are. They should not be used to make comparisons between children; nor is it a race to ‘get to the end’. Please remember, that children learn in different ways and make progress at different times. It is possible that there may be 7 year olds on book band red and 5 year olds on book band turquoise.

Before a child moves onto the next book band we have to check that they understand the texts they are reading. Comprehension is vital; being able to read the words doesn’t always mean that content is understood.  Teachers will ask children questions about characters actions and feelings; they will see if they can understand inferences and make deductions. They will also talk to them about vocabulary and the purpose and intentions of the author’s writing.

Although we hear your child read at school, it is important that they should read at home as frequently as possible.  All research shows that children who read frequently (and are read to by adults) make the best progress. We ask that the adult to whom they read signs their reading record each time and when appropriate make comments.

From Year 1 onwards children have guided reading sessions where they work in small groups with an adult.
